The latest season of The Amazing Race started Sunday night. I watched it on-line after Yom Kippur and have a few things to say.

I haven't really said much about this season of The Amazing Race. At this point, I like most of the teams who are left, though I have reservations about the cheerleaders.

I went to the Adventures in Travel Expo. I am inevitably disappointed in how many very unadventurous companies participate in this, but there's enough to keep me going, especially with half off the ticket price. (I figure the free travel magazines make it pay for itself). In particular, I've been contemplating somewhere in Central America for the November / December time frame and got some very good info from the Nicaraguan travel representative there. I can ignore the people who think a time share in Aruba qualifies as travel, never mind adventure travel.

In other adventure travel related news, I am pleased with this season of The Amazing Race so far. There are a few teams who irritate me, but two of the three who annoyed me the most have already gotten eliminated. I'm sure more teams will piss me off as the season goes on, of course, but it's off to a good start.

Finally, here's a rather distressing item about a place I am interested in. 71 children have died of rabies in Luanda, Angola in the past 3 months. The problem is, of course, infected dogs and poor children are more likely to come in contact with them and, hence, be bitten. Coupled with the lack of awareness that leads them not to get vaccinated right away, this has become a true tragedy. The government is now working to do something about the dogs, so there's hope. But I still found the story shocking.

In lieu of whining about how hectic my day at work was today and how miserably my commute was (partly my fault since I flaked out and got on a Yellow Line train by mistake at Crystal City), here are some comments about last night's episode of The Amazing Race.

I have added hints to the online Encore game.

The Red Sox finally play a postseason game at a civilized hour and John Lester chooses tonight to prove he is human. Sigh.

And then there's last night's episode of The Amazing Race )

Don't forget that my online Encore game is running all week. But, just in case you need a break from racking your brains for song lyrics, I did get out and about today.

I don't watch much television, but I do often take a look at a new series if it has had favorable reviews. So I watched "Life on Mars" tonight and though it was fairly good.

But I am reasonably sure that New York did not have photos on drivers licenses in 1973. I'm not sure when they were introduced, but I am reasonably sure it was some time after I graduated from high school. Which was in 1976, if you're keeping count.

I have, sadly, failed miserably in finding confirmation of this on line, however.

I was reminded this week that one reason I enjoy this show is the opportunity to hear people mangle foreign languages even more than I do.

I was hoping the hippie beekeepers would survive longer as they seemed like they might have been interesting.

Right now, I'm rooting for the comic book geeks. Aside from my natural geek-friendliness, I thought they had a very clever solution to keeping things from falling off the coffee cart.

I haven't sorted out enough about most of the other teams now to have an opinion. I suspect the frat boys will be eliminated pretty quickly from their sheer stupidity. And I am already sick and tired of hearing about how Ken cheated on Tina.

I'm disappointed in tonight's results, but the Goths really did it to themselves. They should have U-turned Nate and Jennifer. And, of course, Kynt's mistake about the receipts was a contributing factor. I'm not sure he actually got it right the second time, since I thought I saw a receipt still on the door when he went back. Once again, reading the clues carefully is crucial.

I'm debating about whether it is worth taping the final episodes. The problem is that the show is rarely on at the correct time due to football delays. (And, yes, I have an old-fashioned VCR, no Tivo or other DVR). I can always just read summaries on-line when get back from my vacation.

I don't believe it. Karmic revenge is working so well this season and the team I most hated just got eliminated. In fact, I like most of the teams who are left, though the meanness between Nate and Jennifer means they really have to go. For the record, I am biased towards Azaria and Hendekea, as they are both engineers (and she is even in aerospace), but I also like the goths.

I also have to admit to being particularly amused by watching teams try to pronounce place names, first in Burkina Faso and now in Lithuania.
