Continuing the easier parts of catching up, here are my answers to the first set of March prompts.
1. If you built a themed hotel, what would the theme be, and what would the rooms look like? Maybe children’s books or fairy tales. I’d be happy to stay in an Alice in Wonderland themed room.
2. What was one of the most interesting concerts you've been to? What was interesting about it? Let’s go with the recent National Symphony Orchestra concert I went to with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting. It was interesting because of his introductions to the pieces.
3. What did you Google last (or Bing, or Duck-Duck-Go, or otherwise search for online)? Various baseball schedules.
4. What odd smell do you really like? I don’t know if it’s odd, but I love the smell of cloves.
5. How far should a government go to prevent its citizens from causing harm to themselves? It depends on whether that harm would affect other people. If it only harms that one person, I don’t see it as the government’s business.
6. If time travel is possible, would we have met time travelers already? We are all time travelers. We just do it at the rate of 60 seconds per minute and go only forward.
7. What is something popular now that annoys you? The expectation of constant connectedness.
8. Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction books? Why? I like both and tend to alternate between them.
9. Do you still seek out new music? What is the best way to discover new music? I try to. A lot of times I discover new music by hearing an opening act at a concert I go to. Or hearing someone unfamiliar at some sort of music festival. I also have a friend who has a radio program and have discovered things from him.
10. What is the most useful app on your phone? Weather. Though I have to admit I find Apple Wallet surprisingly useful.
11. March 11 is "Worship of Tools Day". What is your favourite tool? I think I use an ordinary screwdriver most often.
12. How do you think travelling to a lot of different countries changes a person? For me, foreign travel is all about possibilities. Seeing how other people live opens up ideas of other ways of living.
13. How can technology improve education? Can it hurt education? Technology is useful for looking up facts and for exercises that require some sort of drill. But a lot depends on what your learning style is. I prefer to have more interaction one on one as a way of learning things.
14. While walking/running/biking/other cardio: music or podcasts or silence? Silence. I enjoy hearing the rustling of the wind, birdsong, insects, and so on.
15. Do you have a Pavlovian response to anything? My first reaction to a ringing phone is to assume it is bad news.
16. Is some degree of censorship necessary? Only in the interests of national (or local) security.
17. As an adult, is there anything you don't even pretend to bother with anymore? I pretty much ignore most pop culture. I especially ignore sports other than baseball.
18. What word do you almost always mispronounce? What word do you always mistype? I find the word “neologism" hard to say. I mistype easy words like “the.”
19. Which body part do you wish you could detach (or at least reposition), and why? It would be handy to be able to remove my boobs when I wanted to wear certain clothing.
20. Pineapple on pizza: Yay or Nay? Never.
21. Should taxpayers have the option to explicitly say what they don’t want their tax money spent on? There are many things that are, unfortunately, necessary government functions that require money. So, no.
22. What is the TL,DR (too long, didn't read) version of your life? Suburban childhood, fancy education, traveled all over.
23. Do you think the convenience of technology is worth the loss of privacy that comes with it? In general, no.
24. What is the worst smelling place you've been to? The ladies room in a bus station in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The really sad thing is that I didn’t have to think too hard about that.
25. Does the modern age make global conspiracies more or less feasible? In theory, more feasible, due to greater global connectivity.
26. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this week? I saw a really interesting play the other night, which was focused on the 2002 Dubrovka Theatre siege in Moscow.
27. Have you ever been fired from a job? I was fired from a summer camp job back in 1977 or so.
28. When dining out, have you ever complained about a meal, or sent your order back to the kitchen? Only once that I can think of, when they brought me something completely different from what I’d ordered.
29. If you found out a close friend or relative was doing something illegal, what, if anything, would you do about it?. It depends on what exactly they were doing. I’d probably talk to them first about it. But if it were a serious matter and had potential to harm others, I’d tip off the police.
30. If you had to choose one, would you consider yourself a big-picture person or a detail-oriented person? I am definitely a big picture person. I can handle details, but they don’t usually interest me.
31. Would you rather wake up every morning with $100 (or equivalent in your currency) in your pocket but not know where it came from, or wake up every morning with $50 (or equivalent in your currency) in your pocket and know where it came from? I’d go with the $100. I think it would be better not to know the source, so I didn’t feel beholden to that person or organization.
