52 Ancestors Week 26 – Black Sheep

There have been a lot of people who have been disappeared from my family, i.e. who were deliberately cut off. In some cases, I know what happened, but not always.
My grandfather had a falling out with his sister Laika (Lena WEINER) because he bought my grandmother a fur coat and Laika thought she deserved one too.
Jack KATZ (whose mother, Goldie nee GOLDWASER, was, I believe, my great-grandmother’s sister) got drunk at my uncle Herb’s wedding. Somehow or other, this resulted in my grandmother breaking her leg, which was pretty much the beginning of the end for her.
My mother was adamant that I not contact her cousin, David LUBOFF, who lived less than a mile from me in the mid-1980’s. I never heard a reason. I think it may have been a combination of his having married a non-Jewish woman and her fears that he would try to sponge off of me. The latter was an entirely unreasonable fear, as there isn’t any evidence that he wasn’t doing well for himself.
Nowadays, I talk to everyone. That’s why I claim to be the white sheep of the family.
