I went to see the Austin Lounge Lizards at the Barns at Wolf Trap last night. I like going to events at the Barns, which has a much more intimate venue than the Filene Center (and has easier parking). But I still haven't understood why it's plural, since there is just one barn, unless you count the education building.

At any rate, the concert was significant for being Tom Pittman's final one with the group. He is one of the original members, but is moving to North Carolina. They didn't make a big deal out of his leaving, but it got mentioned more than once. They didn't say but I assume they are looking for a new banjo and dobro player or have one lined up already. Their line-up has changed before, so it doesn't say anything about their future.

They did a mix of material, mocking their own genres (country, western, bluegrass) and our "local industry." For example, in the song "Dumb," which lists dumb things the singers have done, one line ran, "Twice I voted Republican." They also did several other familiar pieces like "Old Blevins," "Jesus Loves Me but He Can't Stand You," and "Teenage Immigrant Welfare Mothers on Drugs." And there was newer, less familiar, material like "The Drugs I Need."

Overall it was a fun concert and, as expected, my laugh muscles got a good workout.
