Washington Folk Festival
May. 31st, 2009 06:32 pmTelling stories while jet lagged is probably not optimal, but that's how my schedule worked out. I don't think I told particularly brilliantly, partly because I started with a story I had only told once before. ("The Man Who Was Used as a Ball" is a folk tale from Fiji.) I forgot one part of it, which wasn't actually important but it still annoys me. I like the story but I don't feel like I own it yet.
After that I told "The Peddler of Zamsk," which is my version of "The Peddler of Swindon." Basically, I moved it from England to the village in Poland my mother's family is from. That worked okay. I do want to look up a Russian Jewish version of it that I know I've heard.
The story that went over the best was "The Neglected Princess," an original story I've been telling for several years. I followed that with Clever Grete, which also worked okay. I had intended to tell "Two Foolish Old People" (a Mongolian story) but forgot to and finished with "The Drawer" (a story I heard a decade or so ago from a friend in England and which features a truly atrocious pun) instead.
Mostly I am inclined to whine about not having a bigger audience, but it was also towards the end of the day. And the weather was really too nice for people to want to sit inside.
I do have several ideas related to storytelling which I want to pursue. June is a fairly quiet month on my calendar so I may actually have time to work on some of those.
