I just saw that Philip Jose Farmer died yesterday. He wasn't one of the intellectual darlings of science fiction writers so far as I could tell, but I found several of his books quite enjoyable. I first read him when I learned that he was the actual author of Venus on the Clamshell by Kilgore Trout, which everybody had assumed Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. wrote. Then I moved on to Riverworld and assorted other of his novels.

I imagine that about now he is waking up on the banks of a broad river.

I always meant to look into his work since he was mentioned (well, hinted at) by Josie Bauer in Spider Robinson's Callahan's series.

But I was not a big enough SciFi fan to pursue the whim.

Which of his books would you recommend starting with?
