I think Gaiman in particular is a complicated example of that in a different way than, say, Caravaggio, since so much of his image as an author was as a feminist who wrote these complex, interesting, strong female characters. The contrast between his private life and his public life is where a lot of the tension is. Nobody was shocked that, e.g., Norman Mailer turned out to be a misogynist abusive asshole, if that makes sense.
