Yet Another Placeholder

Since the last placeholder, I

- went to the V&A
- saw The Pillowman in the West End
- did a trip to Ipswich to visit a friend. We also made an excursion to Sutton Hoo.
- did a day trip to Canterbury
- went to the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton. I saw 5 operettas in 3 days. Some years ago, I came up with a name for a drug to treat ear worms. Will someone please develop a real life version of Lyricease?

I am at an airport hotel overnight and, G-d willing, flying home tomorrow morning.

Do (did) you like The Pillowman? I remember many years ago STARTING to read it. I've no idea what happened then. Did I finish? Did I decide not to? Did I forget? Would you recommend that I try again?

I liked The Pillowman a lot, but I hesitate to recommend it in general. Martin McDonagh's work is always very dark and the characters in this play are especially challenging. What I liked is the way he made use of stories and how some of understanding what happened depends on knowing which story is being followed.

Have you seen any of McDonagh's other plays or his movies? I've been a fan since In Bruges and have seen a lot of his work, which is why I chose The Pillowman for my London theatre outing.

Oh yes, I've loved all his films I've seen! But I haven't read anything apart from the beginning of The Pillowman, if I remember correctly that I never finished it. Reading something as dark as his stories must be much more challenging than watching it though. A film or a play is soon over. And also, I really appreciate his sense of humor, which tends to lighten the darkest of his films.

I find plays difficult to read, in general, though I used to listen to some in audiobook form on long drives.

The Pillowman is definitely a horrifying story but is also very funny.
