It is still easier for me to answer a bunch of prompts all at once than to do things daily. This year, there are actually two sets of prompts. Let’s start with the ones from siobhan63.
1. After roughly two years now of living with various changes and restrictions brought about by the Covid pandemic, which, if any, measures do you think you will continue to do all the time? Wearing a mask on airplanes. Carrying hand sanitizer with me at all times.
2. When you are old(er), what do you think children will ask you to tell stories about? I am already old. I have minimal contact with children. But I tell lots of stories about things I did when I was growing up that don’t really exist any more.
3. January 3 is Fruitcake Toss Day. Do you like fruitcake? Why does it get such a bad rap? I don’t care much for it, for the most part. Mostly, I dislike the dense texture.
4. iOs or Android? IOS.
5. What do you do to get rid of stress? Long walks, hot bubble baths, travel, reading, chocolate
6. How often do you binge-watch TV shows? If I watch a TV series, I probably binge watch it, but I rarely watch anything on TV other than baseball games.
7. Have you ever saved an animal's life? How about a person's life? I don’t think I’ve ever had an opportunity to do either.
8. Would you rather be able to see 10 minutes into your own future, or 10 minutes into the future of anyone but yourself? I suppose it would be convenient to see 10 minutes into the future of someone I was out on a date with.
9. Would you rather lose the ability to read, or the ability to speak? Both would be awful, but losing the ability to speak would be worse, assuming I could still listen to audiobooks.
10. What Olympic (or other) sport would be the funniest to add a mandatory amount of alcohol to? Is chess a sport? Because drunk chess has potential to be amusing without endangering lives.
11. What do you think are three things that are pretty great or interesting about you? Hmm. 1) I have taken a zero gravity flight, 2) I have been interviewed by CNN and the Discovery Channel, 3) I have helped prepare a body for burial.
12. What's your favourite number? Why? 17. The best number should be neither too large or too small, so should be less than, say, 20, but greater than 10. And it should be prime. That leaves 11, 13, 17, and 19. You don’t want a number with positive or negative luck associations, so that rules out 11 and 13. And 19 is too close to 20. So 17 it is.
13. Would you rather have all illicit drugs be legalized, or duelling between consenting adults be legalized? Drugs, but only for personal use. That is, dealing would need to be licensed.
14. What movie would be greatly improved if made into a musical? Never mind movies. I want real life to be made into a musical.
15. What social stigma does society need to get over? Getting treatment for mental health issues.
16. What's the most creative use of emojis you've ever seen? I think emojis tend to be a barrier to creativity.
17. Where do you get most of your news? On-line. My favorite sources include The Washington Post and the BBC.
18. In 40 years, what will people be nostalgic for? Zoom
19. Do you like reality/competition TV shows? Why or why not? If so, which ones? I like some in small doses. I tend to prefer British quiz shows (like Only Connect) to most American game shows, though, of course, I have a soft spot in my heart for Jeopardy.
20. How fast do you read? Fairly fast. In junior high, we were forced to take speed reading because my home town didn't have a high school and the high school we contracted with didn’t start foreign languages until 9th grade.
21. Do you like classical music? If yes, name your favourite composer(s). I like a lot of classical music. It is pretty much impossible for me to name one composer, but I’ll start with Mussorgsky, Satie, and (more conventionally) Vivaldi.
22. How often do you check your phone? Too often. I check my email several times a day. I don’t need to check messages often, since I get a notification sound for those.
23. What is your favourite thing to eat or drink in winter? A hearty bean soup.
24. If you could switch two movie/book/TV characters, what switch would lead to the most inappropriate movie/book/TV show? How about Archie Godwin (from the Nero Wolfe books by Rex Stout) in Wonderland?
25. How often do you stay up past 3:00 a.m.? Rarely.
26. If you opened a business, what kind of business would it be? Either a bookstore or a yarn shop.
27. Who was your worst teacher/professor? Why? I have blocked his name from my memory, but I had a professor for a class on Compressible Fluid Flow who had no idea which concepts were easy and which were hard for students to grasp. He, essentially, wanted us to memorize the solutions to about a dozen problems.
28. Who was your best teacher/professor? Why? I took a few control theory classes from Karl Hedrick and he always kept me excited about the subject.
29. If you are an only child, do you wish you had siblings? If you have siblings, do you wish you were an only child? I have one (older) brother. I mostly wanted to have a younger sibling so I would have had someone to torture the way he tortured me.
30. Do you sleep with your sheets tucked in or out? If you don't use top sheets, if you stay somewhere that does, do you prefer your sheets tucked in or out? I want my bottom sheet tucked in, which is why I use fitted sheets. I don’t use top sheets, since I use a heavy quilt./comforter in winter and a flannel flat sheet as a blanket in summer. I don’t like things tucked in because I tend to be a restless sleeper, so I always untuck sheets if I am staying somewhere that has top sheets tucked in.
31. Toilet paper: over or under? Under. That’s how my family always did it, possibly to keep the cat from unrolling it.
