Ah, Alkan. One of my favorite piano composers. I recall hearing that he was the only pianist who made Liszt nervous to perform for.

Apparently, the story that he died when a bookcase fell on him as he was taking out a volume of the Talmud is not true. The Book of Lists is not trustworthy for that sort of thing, which I'm sure comes as a shock.

I only did a few letters of February as there were only a handful of people I wanted to write to, really. And one of them was returned.

The stat about MIT graduates' debt load is impressive, and heartening. A book I keep meaning to read one of these days, Debt: The First 5,000 Years by David Graeber, says that Aristotle would think of the conditions a lot of Americans are living under as a form of debt slavery, and I think a case can be made for student loans as a form of indenture.
