June 2023 Prompts - Part 2
Jul. 17th, 2023 07:47 pmI’d intended to do this before my trip to Montreal for the NPL con, but I ran out of daylight. Some of these answers may be a week or so out of date.
1. What are you most excited about? Going to Ireland.
2. What were your favorite mall stores when you were in high school? I bought most of my clothes at Alexander’s. There was also a bookstore at Roosevelt Field - maybe Waldenbooks or B. Dalton, which supplied me with paperback novels.
3. Have you ever accidentally caught something on fire? I caught a stack of paper napkins on fire accidentally and melted a stack of plastic cups.
4. Are you at all interested in fashion? I’m interested in fashion in the abstract. And I like getting dressed to the nines from time to time. But I don’t necessarily pay attention to what is in style at any given time.
5. Where in your life do you feel disorganized? Pretty much everywhere.
6. How often do you watch television? Very rarely. I sometimes watch baseball games or movies when I’m at a hotel.
7. What are you tired of hearing about? Celebrities, in general. Especially the Kardashians.
8. Where and when did you last go out to eat at a sit down restaurant? I ate with a couple of friends at Pisco y Nazca, a Peruvian restaurant in downtown D.C., on Saturday night.
9. What do you find more annoying, a sore throat or a headache? Probably a headache, but I really only get those from caffeine withdrawal.
10. What do you miss most about the past? Of all the things I’ve ever lost, I miss my mind the most. More seriously, I miss those triangular vent windows they used to have on cars.
11. Do you know how to play darts? Um, you throw the darts at the dartboard and you get points based on where it sticks. In my college days, we had a dartboard in our kitchen to which we affixed pictures of various people.
12. What kind of computer do you have? A MacPro laptop from about 2012. I am planning on getting a new computer later this year.
13. Have you ever gone out of your area for a concert? I flew to Portland, Oregon to see Paul Simon on his farewell tour. Last year, I went up to Boston to see the Tannahill Weavers with a friend. I am contemplating going to Amsterdam to see Luka Bloom in October.
14. What is your favorite board game from your childhood? I remember really liking Careers. You chose success criteria, based on points you divided amongst fame, fortune, and happiness and got points for different careers you tried out. I may actually still have this game somewhere in my house.
By high school, we spent a lot of time in our house playing scrabble, rummikub, and backgammon.
15. What has made this year so far different than previous years? I went to the Moby Dick Marathon in New Bedford in January. I went to the Kentucky Derby in May. I went to Svalbard (crossing 80 degrees north latitude) in June.
16. What is a lesson you’ve recently learned? I can get things done if I focus and concentrate on them. But I also have to be aware that many things take longer than I think they should.
17. Did you win any superlatives in school? I usually claim that I was elected “most likely to move to California” when I was in high school. (I actually won a number of academic awards and was valedictorian of my junior high and high school classes.)
18. Did you ever own a bean bag chair? No. I think they’re ugly and not particularly comfortable.
19. What magazines do you read regularly? I read Technology Review, mostly for the MIT News section (sort of a separate magazine) but the articles are interesting. I read various travel magazines less regularly.
20. Have you ever seen a magic show? I think I saw one or two when I was a kid. Recently, I saw The Enigmatist and I thought David Kwong was awesome.
21. What’s better: a surprise or knowing you’re going to get it? Both are satisfying in different ways. Surprises (assuming they’re positive ones) are more fun.
22. What’s the last thing you got in a vending machine? About the only thing I ever get from vending machines is a can of soda.
23. What are some hobbies you’d like to try and pick up? I have enough hobbies as it is. Still, I would like to get back into dancing and maybe try contact improvisation. While I’ve done some wet felting, I have never tried needle felting and I think that could be fun.
24. Describe your personality in six words? witty, adventurous, spontaneous, creative, independent, disorganized
25. What are some places that you've been that you'd like to go to again? Italy is always at the top of my list of places to go back to, especially Venice and Bologna.
26. Ever taken pictures in a photo booth? I’m sure I did back in my teens, but I have no idea of what became of those photos. I’ve been at a few parties that had photo booths, too.
27. When was the last time you did something for the first time? I’m sure there is something else I should be remembering, but the best one that comes to mind was going to a horse race.
28. What is the last song you listened to on repeat? “He Gave Us the Wine to Taste” by Jonathan Richman.
29. How long did you last drive in the car for? Maybe about 15 minutes.
30. How have you changed in the last year? Sadly, I think I’ve gotten lazier and less productive.
