Continuing my efforts to close out things from 2022, here is the first of two posts responding to daily prompts that I do monthly because it is easier for me.

1. Who was the president/prime minister/leader of your country when you were born? Eisenhower.

2. What is the best way to spiffy-up french fries? I like fries with sriracha mayonnaise, if that counts.

3. When did you last unexpectedly receive something for free? I got an infusion of yarn from a friend who was clearing out her stash. (I gave most of it away, but not all.)

4. Do you donate food (or money) to food banks? I donate money to a few local charities that serve that role. I also donate to World Central Kitchen.

5. Does your mental image of yourself correspond with what you see in the mirror? My mental image of myself is about 20 or so years younger than the reality.

6. Would you consider leaving your body to medical science? Or maybe just parts of your body? I’d donate organs if they were going to be used immediately.

7. If you could make a 20-second phone call to yourself at any point in your life, when would you call and what would you say? I’d probably call myself when I was starting grad school and tell myself things were going to be alright.

8. If you could turn one book, comic book or other print story into a feature-length movie or TV series, what would you pick and why? I can’t really think of any, since most movie versions of books are so terrible.

9. Have you ever actually punched someone (not counting a friendly jab to the shoulder)? Have you ever been punched? I think I had a few fist fights as a child, but it was long long ago.

10. What product’s packaging do you find excessive or inadequate? What sort of packaging do you hate the most? I really hate it when you buy scissors and need scissors to open the clamshell packaging they come in.

11. In terms of personal care products (shampoo, toothpaste, skin care products, deodorants, etc.) do you mostly stick with the same brands, or do you like to try new ones? Are you influenced by price, e.g. buying what's on sale, even if it's not your usual brand? I have little brand loyalty for most things. Price is one factor, but lack of annoying scents is a bigger one.

12. Is there an ingredient you put into almost everything you cook, even if the recipe doesn't call for it? Is there an ingredient that most recipes call for, but that you tend to leave out? I rarely use salt. I add cinnamon to a lot of things that don’t call for it.

13. Some people believe that if life has no purpose, then there is no reason for living. While others think that if life has no purpose, that frees a person to find/create and follow their own personal purpose. Which is a more valid point of view or are they both equally valid? I like to think that people can find their own meaning.

14. Would you rather have more kitchen counter space or kitchen cabinet space? I’d like more counter space. I have an okay amount of cabinet space, but it could stand to be more functional.

15. How conscious do you think animals are? It depends on the animal Cats are definitely conscious - and plotting to overthrow us, once they acquire opposable thumbs.

16. Did you discover a new (to you) favourite author or musician/band this year? I think I discovered blues singer Shemikia Copeland this year.

17. What do you like most about your family? As a genealogist, I particularly appreciate the members of my family who had criminal records, as they are easier to research. (I had a distant cousin who committed the first mob murder in Los Angeles.)

18. December 18 is "Bake Cookies Day". Do you have a favourite cookie recipe? Care to share? If I’m in the mood to bake cookies for no particular reason, I will usually just do basic butter cookies. I’ve probably posted other cookie recipes here from time to time.

19. In what forms of housing have you resided? Apartment, house, dormitory, hostel, hotel, motel, condominium, tent

20. When were you last onstage, literally or figuratively? New Year’s Eve, when I was part of a storytelling show. I’m typically on stage at least once or twice a month, at least if you count things over zoom.

21. True or false: people only eat cupcakes for the icing. Some people probably do. I tend to avoid cupcakes because I think they usually have too much frosting, making them awkward to eat and too sugary.

22. Do you have a TV series that you wish had run longer than it did? What about one that you think ran on too long? I wish Better Off Ted had run more than two seasons, because I thought it was brilliant. I think the vast majority of TV shows run longer than they should.

23. What songs hit you with a wave of nostalgia every time you hear them? There are lots of them, but the top one would be “Maggie May,” which always takes me back to the summer of 1972.

24. Which of your vices or bad habits would be the hardest to give up? Caffeine.

25. Do you self-censor a lot? Probably not as much as I should.

26. What happens in your country regularly that people in other countries would find strange or bizarre? Mass shootings, alas.

27. Was there ever an event in your life that defied explanation? Many of my decisions defy explanation, but I think this question was more leaning towards the supernatural.

28. What decision have you been putting off? I need to make some travel arrangements and have been wavering on them.

29. Most Valuable Player (MVP): an accolade or award, originally used in team sports to recognize one player for game-changing excellence, and also used outside of sports to recognize excellence in the contributions of an individual to a group effort. Does anyone stand out as your own personal MVP, either at work or in your personal life, for this year? Kim is usually my go-to person when I need help.

30. As the year comes to a close, what’s something you’d like to put behind you? COVID. But, alas, it is not within my control.

31. As the year comes to a close, what are you looking back upon most fondly? It’s between getting to light up Niagara Falls and my trip to Costa Rica.
