November Prompts - Part 1
Dec. 11th, 2022 10:13 pm1. What immature behavior have you displayed recently? Probably some silly bickering during a game of Code Names.
2. What are some very salty foods you enjoy? I don’t like very salty foods. I do like some salty snacks like corn chips.
3. What are some major global events that have occurred during your lifetime? Lots of space related things are the first thing I thought of. The first news event I remember is John Glenn orbiting the earth. The moon landing was another big deal. As were both shuttle explosions. And various unmanned probes. As for non-space events, the assassinations of JFK, Martin Luther King, RFK, and John Lennon come to mind. As does the collapse of the Soviet Union and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall.
4. The restaurant is out of your favorite salad dressing. What do you order instead? Oil and vinegar. (My favorite is sesame ginger.)
5. What do you imagine people see when they look at you? A fat old woman with long, curly hair.
6. Are there any bridges you don't regret burning? I haven’t really burned many bridges, frankly. I guess I should go with not really having had any contact with my doctoral advisor after I filed my Ph.D. dissertation.
7. Have you been stung by a stinging critter? I vaguely recall being stung by a jellyfish as a child. Meat tenderizer is a good thing to use on that.
8. Of all the famous artifacts/exhibits you've seen in museums or art galleries, which was the most disappointing when you saw it in real life? The Mannekin Pis in Brussels is much smaller than I’d expected. On the other hand, his sister (the Jeannike Pis) and the dog (Het Zinneke) are funny.
9. What’s a snack item you have difficulty eating in moderation? Corn chips.
10. You're an extraterrestrial scout sent to assess if it's worth making contact with Earthlings. What are your main observations and recommendations? Don’t bother - they're nuts.
11. Today is Remembrance Day/Veterans Day. Do you know anyone, or have a distant relative, who died in a war? Not as a soldier, but a large percentage of my relatives were killed in World War II in Lithuania.
12. What’s a good song about freedom or being free? It can be a single line or the entire song. The first thing that comes to mind is “Me and Bobby McGee.”
13. Do you have a charity you regularly give to? I give money to the MIT Alumni Association, earmarked for scholarships. I also give money to the Mine Advisory Group, World Central Kitchen, and various local arts organizations.
14. Is there one particular decision/choice you made in your life that is largely responsible for where you are now? Probably going to work at Circle-A.
15. Pick up the nearest book (magazine or any available printed material will do). Turn to page 24 (or the closest to it). Go to the 7th line. What is it? “… watching their daughter develop into an increasingly beautiful, intelligent and popular teenager."
16. "Live hard, die young and leave a beautiful corpse" ~OR~ "Live long and prosper”? Too late for me to die young and leave a beautiful corpse. I think by global standards, I’ve already lived long and prospered.
17. What are you most likely very wrong about? I thought I was wrong once, but I turned out to be mistaken.
18. If you were put into solitary confinement for six months, what would you do to stay sane? Recite poetry I’d memorized.
19. Can you list three good things that happened this week? It’s sort of cheating to use this past week, versus the equivalent week in November, but it’s more fun. I saw a crocodile very close up, went out-rigger canoeing, and (since I got back) went to an excellent chocolate tasting (which I still need to write about).
20. Are child-proof containers becoming increasingly adult-proof? Not really.
21. Does your morning "getting ready" routine vary much between work days and weekends (or other days off if you work weekends)? It did before I retired. On workdays, I had to get up much earlier and dress more respectably.
22. Does stress cause to you eat more or does it kill your appetite? It could do either, frankly. More often I end up eating more junk food.
23. If, in a multi-story building, you only have to go up or down one or two flights, would you prefer to use the stairs rather than an elevator? I’d prefer to use the stairs, but many buildings have their stairwells locked everywhere except the ground / exit floor, so that isn’t always possible.
24. Is there some old family belief, practice, routine or tradition that you know is nonsensical, but you still catch yourself doing it anyway? Does a superstition count? It makes me extremely uncomfortable to open an umbrella inside.
25. What makes you feel terrible while you’re doing it but great when you’re done? Hiking up a steep hill.
26. How's your sleep been this week? About typical - I sleep well for 4 to 5 hours, get up for a couple of hours, then go back to bed.
27. What is the purpose of art in society? You can define "art" as broadly as you like. Art brings beauty into people’s lives. It is also excellent for capturing emotions. And, as the saying goes, art should comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
28. November 28 is "Red Planet Day". Do you think humans will ever get to Mars? Is this an endeavour that we should be devoting resources toward or would the money be better spent here on earth? I think the science that can be achieved by space exploration is worthwhile. And I think humans will always do a better job of exploring than probes will.
29. If everything else about your life stayed the same, how well could you get by living homeless for a year? Being homeless would inherently keep everything else in my life from being the same. But, I suppose, I could technically be homeless and travel. Which would have me getting by pretty well.
30. What in your residence is approaching its last days? I need a new mattress.
2. What are some very salty foods you enjoy? I don’t like very salty foods. I do like some salty snacks like corn chips.
