February 2021: Dustin Diamond was an actor, best known for appearing in Saved By the Bell. Rachna Gilmore wrote Canadian children’s books. Albert Hale was the President of the Navaho Nation from 1995 to 1998. Anne Feeney was a folksinger. Wayne Terwilliger played second base for several teams. Jim Weatherly wrote “Midnight Train to Georgia” (and several other songs). Hershel Shanks founded the Biblical Archaeology Society. Leon Spinks was a boxer. George Shultz was the U.S. Secretary of State from 1982-1989. Ralph Backstroke was a hockey player, primarily for the Montreal Canadiens. Mary Wilson sang with The Supremes. Billy Conigliaro was an outfielder for the Red Sox. S. Priestly Blake cofounded Friendly’s. Leslie E. Robertson was the chief structural engineer for the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Ari Gold was a singer-songwriter who did a one man show about being gay and Jewish. Arne Sorenson was the President and CEO of Marriott. Jessica McClintock designed frilly dresses. Rush Limbaugh was a radio commentator and, in general, an asshole. Rosamund Asiamah Nkansah was the first female police officer in Ghana. Peter Gotti was a mobster. Sir Michael Somare was the prime minister of Papua New Guinea for 17 or so years.
Christopher Plummer was an actor. He won an Oscar for Murder By Decree and Tonys for Cyrano and Barrymore. But he is probably best known for playing Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music.
Chick Corea was a jazz keyboardist and songwriter. He won 23 Grammy awards.
Larry Flynt was a pornographer, best known for founding Hustler. Well, that and getting shot.
Fanne Foxe was the reason Wilbur Mills eventually ended his 38 year congressional career. The main thing I remember from the news reports of the time was her jumping into the Tidal Basin. (Hey, I was a teenager back in 1974). Apparently, she profited off of the whole affair, continuing to work as a stripper using the moniker, “The Tidal Basin Bombshell.”
Lawrence Ferlinghetti was a poet and founder of City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco, a shop I’ve spent many happy hours in. I first read his collections A Coney Island of the Mind and Starting from San Francisco when I was a teenager and was captivated by them. They were, essentially, my gateway drug to beat poetry. He also earned me 7 ghoul pool points.
Margaret Maron was a mystery writer. I liked her Sigrid Harald series, but never got into her Deborah Knott series, which was more commercially successful. She was also a founding member of Sisters in Crime.
