My company announced late yesterday afternoon that we'd be closed today. They also sent an email at 2:30 a.m. that claimed the federal government is also closed. Uh, not quite. The government (Office of Personnel and Management or OPM) announced delayed arrival / unscheduled leave as the policy for today.

That's pretty insane given that transportation is still a problem. The Orange Line is still closed from Vienna to Ballston and parts of most other lines are still closed. Overall 15 out of 86 stations are closed. There are only four metro bus lines running at all in Virginia. Overall, only 29 out of the over 300 bus lines metro operates are running.

Who else thinks there might have been some political pressure behind OPM's decision versus common sense?

By the way, a few places in Maryland have declared emergencies, making it illegal to drive under most circumstances. Most of those are places where there is little if any public transit. (Commuter trains are also not running.)

And before somebody whines what wimps we are here, I was at MIT during the blizzard of '78. Everything was shut down for an entire week. In fact, the city of Cambridge even banned cross-country skis (declaring them a vehicle) because skiiers were getting in the way of snow removal.
