The weather was pretty nice this morning, so I decided to start Thanksgiving off by walking off dinner beforehand. I drove up to Carlisle, Pennsylvania (about 2 hours away) to do the year round Volksmarch event there. While part of the walk was through a bland residential area, much of it was through the historic district, which is lovely. The biggest tourist attraction is probably Molly Pitcher's grave / monument. There are also several attractive 19th century buildings, including the campus of Dickinson College, the first college west of the Susquehanna (and the alma mater of President James Buchanan.) My tongue-in-cheek complaint is that it took longer to do the walk than I expected, due to the large number of historic signs to read. It was a lovely start to the day and reminded me that the freedom to explore so many interesting places relatively nearby is one of the things I am thankful for. By the way, I now have only one more American Revolution walk to do. The weather forecast for the weekend is decent enough that it looks like I will finish this program off then.
I got back in plenty of time for Thanksgiving dinner and the traditional post-dinner jigsaw puzzle. (This was implemented largely to force everyone to clear off the table, but it is a good activity for all ages to participate in.) I'm thankful for lots of things, but the most important is people. I'm blessed enough to know a wide range of people who are passionate about things in their lives and whose passion translates into making the world better in many ways. That trumps all of the kvetching I do about minor annoyances in life.
