Your comments about Jewish music made me chuckle (and yes, I immediately jumped to Rossi), because of something that happened to me at Hebrew Union College (in a para-rabbinic program I did some years ago). The class topic was something in the area of music, and the instructor started by playing excerpts of several pieces of music and asking us each to say "Jewish" or "not Jewish". (Well, write, and then votes were tallied.) The point was to cover a range of styles, content, composers, and whatnot. I was the only person who said "Jewish" to the excerpt from Rossi's Hashkiveinu, which, even if I hadn't known it was a Jewish composer, I would have called that way because it's a Jewish liturgical text. (And it's certainly possible that students from more English-centric congregations just plain didn't recognize it; I don't know.)
I earned knowledge points from the instructor that day, and probably earned annoying-showoff points from some classmates.
