Speaking of Fools ...

I need a name for a character. Specifically, I need a sort of Yiddish sounding name that starts with a hard G and is not "Gimpel."

The context is a Chelm story and I have this thing for alliterative names for characters in them. So the greatest thief in all of Chelm is (Fill in the Blank) the Gonif.

Gittel is, alas, a female name and I m reasonably sure my Gonif is male. I am leaning towards Gadi or maybe Gofni right now as sounding plausible. Gavril is probably the most common Yiddish name that fits the bill, but Gavril the Gonif just doesn't sound right to me for the character.

That's not the direction I want to take this particular story, which is fairly traditional (though not well known). While it could be interesting, it could pose too much of a distraction for the audience I have in mind.

Gedalia would be Gadi for short, I think. I think I am going to try telling the story with Gafni for now and seeing how that feels. (I have two opportunities to tell it next week.)
