April Prompts - Part 2
May. 14th, 2022 11:13 pm1. What’s the longest research paper you’ve ever written? My Ph.D. dissertation which was about 120 pages long if I recall correctly.
2. If money was no object, where would you move to? A villa on the Isle of Capri maybe. Boston, more realistically, with that villa to use during the New England winters.
3. What kind of shampoo do you prefer? I’m not really fussy and mostly use whatever I got from the last hotel I stayed at. That said, there are a few hotels that give you Beekman 1802 goat milk shampoo, which I like enough that I’d actually buy it.
4. What does your favorite shirt look like? The shirt got worn out a while ago, but my very favorite shirt ever was a hand-painted one I bought in South Africa in 1998. Here, have a photo. (I’m on the right.) I have tried to find something similar, but the project I bought it from does not appear to still be around.

5. Have you ever walked out of a movie at the theater? No, but I came very close three times. The first time was for Disco Beaver From Outer Space but, mercifully, it was over by the time I decided to. The second was for Ski Lift to Death but we were watching it on TV at home, so that wouldn’t have made sense. We did watch to the end because we had to see if anybody ever did die. The last time was Blue Velvet but it was the first movie of a double feature. Fortunately, the second movie (Something Wild) was worth staying around for.
6. Do you have a favorite quote? “Who, cher monsieur, will sleep on the floor for us?” - from The Fall by Albert Camus. To me, it epitomizes what human generosity should be about.
7. Are you good at being spontaneous? I prefer planning things, but I am willing to do things on short notice if they sound interesting.
8. What kind of music do you dislike most? I don’t like much rap music.
9. Do you like any board games or card games? I like a lot of both.
10. Are there any foods you never get tired of? Berries. Ahi tuna. Somewhat surprisingly, borscht with sour cream and potatoes. (I don’t remember if I’ve told the story here before, but my mother once bought 12 cases of borscht, with 24 bottles per case, at a public television auction. We ate a lot of borscht.)
11. How many cars does your household own? One.
12. What do you wish you’d spent more time doing five years ago? Traveling for fun, versus work. Dancing. Sleeping. Keeping my house more organized.
13. Did you get excited to go back to school as a child? Sort of. I was usually pretty bored by the end of summer.
14. Which parent was more strict when you were growing up? Definitely my father.
15. Who knows more about you: online friends or offline? I’d say they know about the same amount about me, but know different things.
16. What do you think about as you fall asleep? I sometimes start having dreams before I am actually asleep. It’s hard to describe, but I have random weird images.
17. What do you like in your salads and what dressing do you prefer? Lettuce, arugula, cucumber, scallions, radishes, carrots, radishes, beets, chickpeas. As for dressing, I probably use sesame-ginger most often. But I also use vinaigrette. Sometimes I even use thousand island, especially if I am having something like fish sticks and corn on the cob for supper.
18. Are there any air fresheners in your house? Not really, though I do have a can of Febreze which I spray on the mattress before putting fresh sheets on.
19. What is the most expensive thing you’ve ever purchased outright? My car.
20. Do you prefer sweet or sour candy? I prefer either chocolate or sesame or nut based candies (e.g. halvah or sesame brittle or peanut brittle). So, I guess, sweet.
21. Do you put ketchup on top of your french fries or on the side? I prefer sriracha mayonnaise on my french fries. I put it on the side for dipping.
22. What movie has the best ending? This is a tough question. Maybe As Good As It Gets. If you can deal with a decidedly unhappy ending, maybe The Visitor.
23. Who was the last person that borrowed money from you? I can’t think of anyone having borrowed money from me in years.
24. What was the last adventure you went on? I like to think of my life as a continuous adventure.
25. What was the last thing you searched for online? A chart showing images of birthstones. (This had to do with a puzzle I was writing.)
26. What’s one food that you eat more than twice a week? Cereal.
27. What’s one thing you’re glad you’ve done recently? Going to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival last weekend.
28. Are you more of a practical thinker or more of an imaginative thinker? I think I’m both, as circumstances call for. Though I prefer being imaginative.
29. How far are you into the book you’re currently reading? I just started it last night, so maybe 20 or so pages.
30. Do you have a facial expression you seem to pull a lot? A guy I knew in college claimed I had only two expressions - smiling and smiling broadly. Apparently he didn’t figure out those were my reactions to seeing him.
