The weather was nice and the event was just a few miles away from home, so I really had no excuse not to do the National Trails Day volksmarch event in downtown Fairfax this morning. I'm glad I did as it was a lovely walk, divided between various park trails (paved or graveled, which is good since they would otherwise have been a muddy mess given the past week's weather) and the historic downtown. I noticed a couple of historic signs I don't recall seeing before, e.g. one on the birth of the Confederate battle flag. The city of Fairfax does seem to be playing up its civil war history a bit more, as they've opened an interpretive center at Blenheim, too. (That wasn't on the walk route, but I drove past it on the way to the starting point.)

Another thing to note is that I made surprisingly good time, about 15-20 minutes faster than usual for a 10K, despite one wrong turn that added two blocks to the route. Not that I'm exactly lightning fast anyway but I have been trying to add in some interval training, i.e. a minute or so at a much faster pace every now and then. (I do more deliberate interval training when I walk on a treadmill, by the way, but I have not been doing that so much.) On the down side, I was definitely feeling the hills.

After the walk, I ran a few errands (yarn store, supermarket) and came home to have lunch and do laundry. A nap was also a good thing. Time now for dinner and a drive to Maryland for a story swap.
