October 2023 Prompts - Part 2

1.What was your favorite sport to play? I liked racket sports. I played both tennis and badminton. I preferred the latter. I also enjoyed archery. And, of course, all the kids in my neighborhood (and some of the adults, e.g. my Dad) played softball.

2. What was your first pet and what did you name it? We had turtles when I was really little, but I don’t even remember them having names. Later on, we ha a white mouse named Rosie. And, after that, we had a cat named Sunshine. I didn’t get to name either of those. Rosie had been my next door neighbor’s, until their mother freaked out over having a pet mouse, so she came with that name. And my mother named Sunshine.

3. Are you friends with your neighbors? I’m not close friends with anyone here. I used to be fairly friendly with my next-door neighbor, but she moved away after knee replacement surgery because the stairs were an issue for her. And there was a couple down the hall I was fairly friendly with, but they moved to California. There are a couple of people I chat with when I see them around, but I don’t seek them out.

4. What is your least favorite thing about the season you're currently experiencing? For the most part, I am happy with autumn. However, I could live without all the Christmas advertising right now. At least wait until after Thanksgiving.

5. Can you make a paper airplane? Yes, but I’m not great at it.

6. Have you ever eaten grass? I am pretty sure I’ve never eaten grass as in the stuff for lawns, but I have eaten grains in the grass family like barley, oats, rice, wheat, etc. And then there are things like bamboo shoots and lemongrass.

7. Do you prefer water to be ice cold or at room temperature? I prefer it at room temperature. Unless you are talking about carbonated water, which should be cold.

8. What are some things you've been putting off that you need to do? Some travel arrangements for next year. And, of course, housework, including getting a handyman in to do some things.

9. Are your ears pierced? No. I have never had any desire to get anything pierced.

10. What brand of earbuds/headphones do you own? I have no idea what brand they are, other than they aren’t the ones that come with the iPhone.

11. Where do you buy most of your clothes? I buy travel clothes at REI. I buy dressy clothes at Macy’s. I buy some things at thrift shops.

12. If you were to open a business, what kind of business would it be? A combination yarn store and used book store. It should probably also sell coffee and chocolate.

13. Do you take pictures often? More often than I ever expected to, thanks to the iPhone.

14. Would you rather have no computer or no cellphone for a week? It would be easier to live without a computer.

15. What’s the earliest time you ever had to wake up? I’m sure I’ve had to get up around 3 a.m. for some early morning flight. But, frankly, at that point, it is easier just to stay up all night.

16. What is your favorite candy bar? The Five Star Hazelnut Bar from Lake Champlain Chocolates is perfect, as far as I’m concerned. It is also ridiculously expensive and sold only at a few stores in my area. I learned about the existence of this delightful confection from Steve Almond’s book Candyfreak, y the way, and I blame him every time I lay out $3.50 for one.

17. What is the last thing you think of before you go to sleep? I don’t think there’s anything in particular. I sometimes think about things I want to do. Or things I did during the day. Sometimes random earworms occupy my mind.

18. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? In an ideal world, I want to have lots of light all the time. Which would mean living in New England in the (north American) summer and living in Uruguay or Argentina in the north American winter.

19. How did you get your worst scar? I don’t have any particularly awful physical scars. My emotional scars, now there’s a different story, and that probably starts with my first piano teacher, who had this horrible fondness for making siblings play duets.

20. What is your favorite cuisine? Probably Vietnamese, There’s the joy of having pho for breakfast, for one. And lots of interesting (but cheap) tropical fruits. And banana flower salad. And, thanks to the French, great bread and coffee.

21. Do you have any hidden talents? I can tie a knot with one hand.

22. Do anything spontaneous lately? My trip to San Antonio for the annular eclipse was fairly spontaneous.

23. Do you get stressed out easily? Unfortunately, yes.

24. Do you read your horoscope? No. Like most Virgos, I don’t believe in horoscopes.

25. What was the biggest fork in the road of your life? The decision to go to MIT defined a lot of the paths my life took, in a generally positive way. The decision to go to grad school at Berkeley changed a lot of things, in much more negative ways.

26. How would you describe your sense of humor? I love puns and wordplay.

27. What is the smartest choice you made as a teenager? Going to a couple of science programs was probably at the top. I went to a Saturday science program at Columbia University for 3 years and went to a summer program in biochemistry at a school in Connecticut the summer between junior and senior years of high school. More than the subject matter, those both gave me a lot of independence in different ways. The social aspects were helpful to me in preparing for going to college, too.

28. Did/do you play I Spy while in long car journeys? We played lots of games in the car, but I don’t remember ever playing that one. We mostly looked for letters of the alphabet on signs (which made things like liquor stores and pizza parlors a great find). We also kept track of what license plates we saw. Or we played the same sort of parlor games we played at other times, like Geography (you name a place whose first letter starts with the last letter of the previous place) or The Minister’s Cat in which you take turns coming up with phrases that have the pattern “the minister’s cat is an amiable cat who adores avocados” and take turns going alphabetically.

29. What kind of pictures do you post online most frequently? Travel related photos.

30. Last store you went into? I went to the supermarket yesterday.

31. Are you doing anything for Halloween? Halloween has passed and I didn’t do anything special on the day itself. But I did tell a Russian vampire story in a concert the night before.

I always liked badminton and was impressively good at it, for a kid with absolutely no skill at any other sport ever. Of course, I was the only one who liked it and therefore very rarely got to play.

A combination yarn store and used book store. It should probably also sell coffee and chocolate.

I'd shop here. I feel like you'd need a store cat, though.

Oh, I'm jealous. My HS mostly did volleyball and I have absolutely the wrong body-shape to play. (Did then, do now.)

I'd like to think so!
