Nylons

I keep a list of things that I will not do once I retire. One of the items on that list is wearing pantyhose.

So it intrigues me to notice how many women I see on the metro who are not wearing pantyhose. In the case of the youngsters who wear flipflops, hose wouldn't be feasible, of course. I like to believe they change to respectable footwear when they get to work and that includes putting on hose. (I admit that I often wear sneakers or Keene sandals and change to pumps when I get to work myself.) But I noticed an awful lot of women wearing decent adult shoes who were also bare legged.

Is this a real trend? Am I really just an old fuddy duddy if I think it looks wrong not to wear nylons with business attire?

My wife doesn't own pantyhose.

I believe the last time I wore nylons was 1996. Hate them. Loathe. Despise. I go bare legged (though I'm not opposed to tights).

I despise nylons, grudgingly accept knee-highs (I don't wear skirts that come above my knees so I can), and would love for this to be a new trend. I haven't seen it with "real" shoes, though, only sandals. I also wonder how well shoes would work on bare feet; wouldn't the sweat from the feet become a problem? I know that Uggs work, but they're fleece-lined and that probably makes a difference.

I'm pretty fashion-oblivious, and fortunately my employer does not place demands on me in this regard. I dress up for Shabbat and the occasional special event.

Even 20 years ago in New York, I didn't wear nylons on hot days. I wore dresses or unlined separates on those days. With a lined suit it seems wrong. I also wore black microfiber tights every other day I could get away with.

These days I wear pants. If it's good enough for Hillary, and Valerie Jarrett ...
