Oh no, over-explaining to border guards is one of the basic mistakes that I thought most people learned early. I'm glad it didn't turn out to be more of a hurdle than it was.
(A friend was once crossing the US/Canada border and was asked the routine question "are you carrying more than $10,000?". Precise geek that he is (and I totally relate), he instinctively asked: US or Canadian? That cost him a couple hours, and he was especially chagrinned because he had about $150 at the time.)
