VASA Meeting
I actually thought I had a free day, but then I got an email reminder about the Virginia Storytelling Alliance (VASA) membership meeting and realized that I was free to go to it. The meeting part was reasonably brief and followed by a story swap and a dinner outing. It was a good opportunity to see a lot of people I see rarely - especially since I haven't managed to make it to any of the Saturday storytelling series events. (I am especially annoyed that I will miss the September event in Lorton, but I accidentally double booked myself. It's somewhat surprising that I don't do that more often, actually.)
Anyway, the meeting was down in Sandston, near the Richmond airport. The directions Mapquest gave me were good, except for underestimating the time needed. I do usually add at least a half hour to directions involving I-95, but I thought that Saturday traffic wouldn't be so bad. I thought wrong and it just crawled from somewhere a bit north of Dumfries all the way to Fredericksburg. There were a couple of fender benders contributing to that, but part of it looked like it was just volume, since the major choke point seemed to be the end of the HOV lane. I ended up getting there about a half hour late. Which was not really a big deal since the business meeting part isn't the fun stuff.
The story swap was excellent. Not only did everybody tell (I told "Thank You, Miss Tammy" in case anybody was wondering) but there was a wide mix of material. Ian had some wonderful stuff about bee keeping, Jane had interesting reminiscences about a house she had lived in (definitely the makings of a one woman show there), Debbie had a cute twist on "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," Kim had a personal story about being in the right place at the right time, and so on.
After that, we headed up the road to an Italian restaurant. We shared the room for large groups with a birthday party and a wedding reception. The food was just okay, but the conversation was lively. All in all, it was a very nice day.
And, not that you asked, there were no traffic issues on the way home and I made it back in about 20 minutes less than the Mapquest estimate.
